Scholarships

Boarding Scholarships for Isolated Students assist eligible students from rural areas who are disadvantaged by a low family income and geographic isolation. The scholarship will assist a student who:

• wishes to attend and board at a NSW government agricultural high school. Applicants in this category must have been accepted for enrolment, or be eligible for enrolment.
OR
• wishes to attend a specialist NSW government secondary school that conducts selection procedures and who would need to board away from home to do so. Applicants in this category must have been accepted for enrolment, or be eligible for enrolment.
OR
• needs to board at a school term hostel to access a NSW government secondary school.

General Conditions of Eligibility
1. Student must live in NSW. The student’s primary carer must be a permanent resident of NSW.
2. Student must be in Years 7 to 12.

Applications for students who receive Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC), ABSTUDY or Youth Allowance from Centrelink will not be considered for the scholarship. The scholarships committee will take into account the amount of other educational assistance received by families when considering applications.

The scholarship is to be used to reduce the student’s residential fees or the cost of boarding away from home. Scholarships are valued at $4,980 in 2017.

Hurlstone House Education Fund – awarded for fees reduction the following year.

Mr Theodore Willcocks bequeathed the Willcocks Scholarship in memory of his sister, Kate and to mark their involvement with the Ex‐students Union of Hurlstone. Their home, Hurlstone House, at Newtown housed many former Hurlstone students who went on to study at Sydney University. They extended the interest and care given to these boarders to the wider Hurlstone Community.
Kate supervised the Old Boys’ Stall at the Hurlstone fetes for three decades. She was a tireless worker for the school and always had a wish to help young Hurlstonians who were in need of financial assistance for their studies.
The Willcocks Scholarships are to benefit students who have been awarded a place at Hurlstone as a boarder and are in Years 7, 8, 9 or 10. This is needs based and students who already receive a Government Scholarship for boarding are ineligible.
Those awarded the Willcocks Grants would be students who have demonstrated the values upon which the Hurlstone culture is built. These include accepting individual responsibility, cherishing wholesome values and taking pride in personal excellence. Financial need is also a criteria.
